Half Mast (demo)

about

I wrote this song in 2019, upon hearing that Keith Flint from The Prodigy had died. I remember feeling at the time that we were losing a lot of people, and especially men of a certain age. That was the initial spark, after which the song opened up to become a more universal tribute to 'absent friends'.

I recently rearranged this song, and recorded the live take for this demo yesterday afternoon. In the evening, I received the tragic news that we'd lost Phil Wyman, who I felt a kinship with even though we only met a handful of times. He was a down-to-earth, kind-hearted and friendly guy who led a very creative life and seemed to have endless friends. Mulling it over earlier today, it struck me as odd that I'd heard the news the same day I'd been working on a song about loss, and this realisation spurred me on to finish the demo. So, this one's for Phil, and for anyone else we may have loved and lost. Jamie (29/5/2023)

"So, here's to absent friends
I say to you, let not the journey
Be sullied by it's end
I can't pretend to know where we go
But I hope that I
Will see you once again"
